In order to apply for a Handgun License:

  • **NEW** It is required that you have your fingerprints scanned electronically. You will need to schedule an appointment to have this done at: CLICK HERE FOR ELECTRONIC FINGERPRINT SCHEDULING. Please note that there is an additional fee for this service.
  • You must apply at the Sheriff's Department in person AFTER you have filled out the online application and had your fingerprints electronically scanned.  (See below for the fees due.)
  • You must be a resident of Whitley County. (If you live within the city limits of Columbia City, South Whitley or Churubusco, you must report to their respective Police Department)
  • You must bring a valid, state issued, picture i.d. You must have your correct address on the i.d.
  • Please bring the correct amount of cash with you (either $10.00, or $40.00, or $50.00 - see below). We do not accept personal checks. It is helpful to bring the correct amount of cash with you because we do not always have change for large bills.
