Responsibilities: Assists the public, government officials, and other departments regarding planning, zoning regulations, and building codes. Serves as the primary staff and attends meetings for the Whitley County Plan Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Redevelopment Commission. Prepares and processes building permits and other office documents and applications. Schedules inspections and communicates with inspectors. Assists Director, Building Inspector, and other staff.

Requirements: Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, or a related field; or 3-5 years of experience in planning, development, local government, or a related profession; or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Must work well with other members of the department and the public.

The Deputy Director for Emergency Management is responsible for developing, administering, and maintaining emergency response procedures in preparation for, during and following disasters.  The Deputy Director may be called upon to fulfill the role of Director at times in which the Director is otherwise deployed or unavailable immediately to perform his/her duties.

Hours will vary. Experience and/or related education necessary. 

Job Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED;

Must be 21 years of age;

Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record;

Thorough knowledge of and ability to make practical application of local, state and federal emergency management operational plans and procedures;

Ability to effectively communicate during routine and emergency situations with co-workers, volunteers, local, state, and federal emergency service personnel, law enforcement, County officials and members of the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities;

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision, under time pressure and on several tasks at the same time;Ability to carry out and follow written and oral instructions and to present finding in oral and written form;

Ability to work with others in a team environment and to work rapidly for long periods of time;

Ability to serve on call and respond swiftly, rationally, and decisively to emergency situations from off-duty status.

Applications are being accepted for a part time Veterans’ Service Officer for Whitley County Veterans’ Service Department.

The County Veterans' Service Officer works under the direct supervision of the Director of the Indiana Department of Veterans' Affairs (IDVA) although appointed and paid by the county. The service officer must have served at least 6 months of active military service in the armed forces. The service officer must attend an annual training conference, normally conducted in June, to receive update training and to re-certify as competent as a service officer.

The primary function of the service officer is to assist veterans, their dependents and survivors, in obtaining the state and federal benefits to which they may be entitled. In that capacity the service officer will help with the completion of federal and state applications for those benefits.
