INMATE MAIL POLICY

Incoming Mail:

Beginning December 15, 2017, the Whitley County Jail will no longer accept any correspondence on colored paper or enclosed in colored envelopes. This includes greeting cards; they will not be allowed. Incoming correspondence to offenders must be in plain white envelopes. The letter/correspondence inside the envelope must be on originally-purchased, plain white lined paper. No photocopies will be allowed. All paper must contain lines; no plain paper is allowed

Photos are allowed, but must be no larger than 4 inches by 6 inches. No photocopies of photos are allowed.

Incoming correspondences must not contain any markings from crayons or markers of any kind. 

Incoming correspondences must not contain any type of scent or fragrance sprayed or rubbed on the paper or envelope.

Incoming correspondences must not contain newspaper clippings or photocopies

Incoming correspondences must be delivered by the United States Postal Service. No drop-off or walk-in correspondences will be accepted.

Incoming correspondence must include a legible hand-written or typed full return address, including the name of the person sending the correspondence to the jail. Other than the names and addresses, no drawings or other writing is allowed on the envelope. Other than the envelope flap adhesive, no adhesive labels, stickers, tape or glue is allowed on the envelope. 

Once correspondence is received at the Whitley County Jail , all incoming correspondences will have all stamps, envelope flaps and glue strips removed.

Publisher direct mailings and legal mail are not subject to these rules. Indiana Jail Standards and Whitley County Jail Standard Operating Procedures will be followed for these mailings. 

ANY INCOMING MAIL FOUND TO VIOLATE ANY OF THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS WILL BE RETURNED TO THE SENDER. IF THERE IS NOT A RETURN ADDRESS PROVIDED, THE CORRESPONDENCE WILL BE DISPOSED OF.

Outgoing Mail:

All outgoing mail must include a full return address, including the name of the inmate mailing the correspondence from the jail. 

Any outgoing mail that does not include a full return address, including the inmate's name, will be disposed of.
